Certification of printing inks according to ISO 2846

With the certification of printing inks, manufacturers prove that their materials are conform to ISO 2846. Printers who purchase Fogra-certified printing inks can be sure that the target values of the PSO or ISO 12647 can be achieved.

Your benefit

The standards series ISO 2846 (Part 1: Offset printing inks, Part 2: Newspaper printing inks) describes the requirements regarding solid tone colours within a defined range of ink layer thickness and transparency.

If a printing ink meets these requirements, the manufacturer receives a certificate valid for two years and, on request, an individual FograCert logo showing the high quality standard. Furthermore, the printing ink is listet in the FograCert database of certified inks.

What you need to do

For the laboratory tests it is sufficient to send approx. 100 g of each printing ink to be certified to Fogra. In addition, we need the exact designation or brand name.

Our procedure

The test takes place by producing colouring series on a test printing device. The application quantities of the inks are precisely determined using analytical scales. After printing, the samples are dried according to their intended drying mechanism.

A colour measurement device is used to check whether the target colour coordinates of the standard are reached within the specified ink layer thickness range. To determine the transparency, the print samples are measured before and after printing on a black test substrate.

Expert knowledge

In 2017 a revision of ISO 2846-1 took place. Among other things, the research results obtained within the the Fogra project 42.027 served as the scientific basis. Its objectives were the quantification of the factors influencing the colour coordinates of test prints on the material side and a review of the regulation for determining transparency.
